Kaga Dou and Sode
ERA: Early-Middle
Edo (late 1600s-early 1700s)
STYLE: Kaga Dou sode Set
SCHOOL: Kaga
REGION: Kaga – West coast of Japan
SIGNATURE: None visible
Here is a Kaga dou sode set that is a very nicely matched composite from
the same school and period. The dou is composed of iron completely wrapped in
leather. The bottom part of the dou is kiritsuke iyozane plates that are wrapped
in leather that has been prepared with kinbyakudan (gold leaf with lacquer over
it) a very unusual and high quality technique. The kusazuri (tassets) have been
prepared in the same way with the bottom two rows only being done in red
lacquer. Another very interesting part of this dou is the fukurin (piping) this
is done in ladybug pattern lacquer. The sode which have been matched to this dou
are iron with very thick moriage lacquer and possibly leather lamination. The
condition of this set is generally very good however the original cords holding
the suspension clasps have become frayed and in an attempt to preserve the
original cords, makeshift ones have been connected. There are some detached
lacing hear or there, and one kusazuri has had a corner nicked. In all a very
rare and unusal piece that would go well with a kaga or namban style kabuto.
