Kawa Zusumi Iyozane Dou
Era: Late Momoyama-Early Edo
Style: Kawazusumi Hon Iyozane Ni Mai Dou (Leather wrapped two section cuirass
composed of true scale)
Region: Likely Etchu province – Kyushu
Signature: None
School: Etchu
Ownership: Likely a retainer of the Hosokawa clan
Here is a rather rare type of dou in near mint condition. Unlike many kawazusumi
iyozane dou, this example is actual hon iyozane, meaning that rather than bands
of iron plate cut to look like individual scales, this dou is indeed composed of
true small scales laced together by leather cord, before being wrapped in the
outer leather (horse leather). This style of dou was popularized by the Hosokawa
clan and it is believed that a similar one was worn by Hosokawa Tadaoki at the
battle of Sekigahara. This example is an earlier type of this style. This dou
would match well with just about any sangu and kabuto and would be an excellent
base for a top notch armor.
