Namban Dou
Era: Late Edo
Style: Yokoyagi Okegawa Namban Dou (Dou composed of horizontally riveted plates
that have a central ridge in the front section similar to a European cuirass)
Region: Likely Kanto (Central-northern Honshu)
Signature: None Visible
School: Likely Myouchin
Here is a very nice solid iron dou with leather kusazuri (tassets) in completely
original condition. There is a slight central ridge in the front section of the
dou and thus it is classified as a namban dou. Overall, the lacing and condition
of the iron is in very good condition, however, there is quite a bit of lacquer
loss to the kusazuri because the are made of leather and the shitaji that was
used in the late Edo period is of a lower quality than previous eras and
therefore has a problem sticking to the base – thus cracks and lacqer loss
occurs frequently on late Edo armor. On the other hand the lacquer on the dou,
and the original lacing is in generally very good condition considering the age.
A nice dou at a very reasonable price.
