Ko Umetada Tsuba

This simple and austere yamagane tsuba is a precursor of the Umetada tradition which blossomed under Umetada Myoju of the late Momoyama period.  The motif is typically floral, with large, bold rounded leaves falling over the plate on both sides.  The motif retains black lacquer as do parts of the plate.  The seppadai is characteristically thinner than the edge.

It is difficult to describe this tsuba suitably.  The plate and decorative treatment are elegant and subtle.  The colour of the metal is exquisite, with plum tones contrasting with remnant black lacquer, and a wet patina.  The hitsuana seems irregular, but this is by design, not later alteration.  This piece has been preserved over the centuries with care and attention.  It comes in a high quality custom kiri box and a antique silk slipcase with ivory closure and calligraphic plaque to Ko Umetada.   This tsuba is an advanced piece, for an established collection.
