Gumpai with Stand and Box

Here is a very nice Late Edo period gumpai. This gumpai has what I believe to be a tin plate base with a wood handle. The plate has been covered with gilt leather that has had gold makie (applied raised urushi) dragons painted on it. The wood handle is decorated with Edo period kanamono and is decorated with gold makie arabesque pattern. There are some later inset kanamono that were added on the four corners between the plate piping on either side. These kanamono are not original to the gumpai but show that somebody valued it enough to go to the trouble of making them for it. There is a kamon kanamono (family crest ornamental metal piece) on either side of the handle which we have not yet researched. This gumpai comes with a very well made kiri wood stand that breaks down and a very nicely fitting Edo period gumpai box. A very rare and complete set.
