Orphaned Fuchi signed
Funada Ikkin Yoshinaga and dated 1847: Goto Ichijo School
The motif of this fuchi is a tranquil treed shoreline at night.
Out upon the calm waters are boats sailing beneath a crescent
moon. Shibuichi - an alloy of silver and copper, is employed to
give a somber, quite feel to the piece. The underside plate (tenjo
gane) bears the makers signature and date of manufacture. It
reads Kokwa Hinoto Hitsuji Toshi Funada Ikkin Yoshinaga. This
roughly translates to :
Fourth year of Kokwa (1847) by Funada Ikkin Yoshinaga.
Funada Ikkin was a student of Goto Ichijo. Born in 1812 and died
Oct 18 1863. At the age of 15, he went to Edo to study under
Kumagai Yoshinobu. Two years later (1828) He became student to
Goto Ichijo. Ten years later he finished his studies and took
the name Ikkin. By 1839 he returned to his home prefecture of
Dewa and became a retainer of the Sakai Daimyo at Tsurugaoka.
Goto Ichijo (1791-1876) - the last mainline master of the Goto
School, turned out a number of very accomplished students over a
long and brilliant career, most noteworthy were; Ikkin, Issho,
Isshi, Isshen and Araki Tomei. I am very fortunate to own a
kozuka by yet another of his pupils :Sugioka ikken - the
workmanship being un-mistakenly Ichijo school.
