Fuchi Signed Hamano Yasuyuki
Orphaned fuchi: Signed: Hamano Yasuyuki with kao, circa 1800
Very finely executed orphaned fuchi of shibuichi. All elements of carving,
called “bori”, are represented here. The fuchi depicts a waterfall within a lush
forest, the water issuing from a rocky crevasse beside a large pine tree.
Moss upon the rocks, spray, and pine shoots are embellished with gold inlay.
All other detail is either encrusted or carved away using takazogan through
shishaibori techniques.
Hamano Yasuyuki (1763 - 1836) is the maker of this piece. His signature can be
found in bold characters on the “tenjo gane”, or under plate. Below the four
character signature is a “kao”, this was a personal mark used by the artist as a
type of seal.
Yasuyuki’s personal name was HamanoYenjuro. He was a pupil to Naoyuki since
childhood. Later in life Yasuyuki became a pupil of Hamano Noriyuki, and
later still, changed his name to Hiroyuki. Other names used by Yasuyuki
were Noriyuki and Naoyuki.
