Orphaned Fuchi by Nara Toshishige
Orphaned
Fuchi signed: Nara Toshishige. circa 1750
The use of a sentoku body lends this fuchi a warm mellow
atmosphere. The entire spectrum of iroe incrustation: gold, silver,
copper, shakudo and shibuichi, are employed to illustrate a serene
domestic landscape of a thatched dwelling amid mountainous rocks,
trees and shrubs - next to a body of water.
Nara Toshishige (circa 1725-50) Lived in Edo (Kanda) and was was
a student of Nara Toshinaga around 1740. (H10473. Not much more
is know about the artist. There is one kozuka (not pictured) listed
in the Naunton collection within the Nara section. Any other
examples of his work appear to be quite scarce. Both Shosankenshu
and Shinsen Kinko Meikan picture the signature of Toshishige, but "kao"
in this example differs considerably.
