6 Plate Toppai Kabuto
ERA: Momoyama Period
STYLE: 6 plate toppai kabuto
SCHOOL: Likely Haruta
REGION: Central Japan
SIGNATURE: None visible
Here is a very nice, simple sengoku period black lacquered six plate toppai
kabuto. This style of kabuto was very popular during the Momoyama period. This
particular style is indicative of those made within a very close time period to
the Battle of Osaka (1615). One nice thing about this kabuto is that it has its
original, unmolested black lacquer and its original cotton fiber lacing which
was most common for armor actually worn on campaign during the warring states
era. Pieces that are “ubu” from the warring states era often have original
cotton lacing. The original liner is in place, though it is tattered, but can be
repaired, and there is a later shinobi-o cord. The rust on the inside is
superficial and does not threaten the integrity of the iron plates. There are
some losses to the original urushi, however, it is not a difficult restoration
and we will provide professional restoration services at an additional charge if
the buyer wishes the piece restored.
