Here is a very nice, high quality sengoku period helmet that has had a very high
quality 20th century restoration. The hachi (bowl) is composed of 60 plates
which is an unusual and rather high number of plates for a kabuto constructed in
the Late Muromachi - Momoyama period. The hachi has been fitted with a very nice
Muromachi style HON KOZANE (individual true scale) shikoro. The shikoro is very
well made and was made by an actual armor shokunin “craftsman” rather than mass
produced at a factory. Original period shikoro of this style are nearly
impossible to acquire as most shikoro of this type were changed out for plate
iron shikoro from the End of the Muromachi period and were discarded. Most of
the surviving examples are found in shrines and temples. The cost to produce
this shikoro is so great that today it would cost more to have one made than we
are selling this complete piece for. The fukigaeshi of the shikoro is adorned
with the crest of the mainline Honda family. This kabuto is in overall excellent
condition with complete liner, and chin cord with perfect lacing. This kabuto
would make an excellent display piece for somebody who wishes to have a nice,
complete example representing the splendor of the Muromachi Period in excellent
condition.
