MUROMACHI AKODA NARI KABUTO with BATTLE SCAR

ERA:   Muromachi (Early 1500s)

STYLE:   Akoda Nari

SCHOOL:  Haruta

SIGNATURE:  None

Here is a kabuto hachi that is exactly what it looks like.  It is a classical Haruta shaped Muromachi period kabuto hachi.  The classical bulbous rear of this kabuto shows that it is a haruta.  Examination of the inside of the kabuto shows that the steel tensility was most definitely haruta because there is an obvious sword scar.  It shows that the kabuto was struck full on by a sword, however it was not cut.  It can be discerned that this battle scar is real because it was covered up on the outside by the lacquer which hides it.  The lacquer was done in the Momoyama-Early edo period.  This kabuto is light weight and made from steel with a very strong kitae as most haruta kabuto from this era were, as opposed to other schools which opted to form kabutos out of softer, thicker steel.  This haruta kabuto has undergone some changes over its existence.  The koshimaki has had some repair work done to it for stylistic and reparative purposes.  Originally the koshimaki would have flared out to the side to support an umbrella shaped shikoro, however it now goes straight down.  Inspection of the interior of the hachi shows the repairs.  This is a top quality piece with a lot of clas that dates way way back.
