CORAL INLAY DAISHO SAYA SET
Here is a superb, near perfect condition daisho saya set dating to the late Edo
period. The thick black lacquer has been inset with shell or coral cutouts
representing birds, possibly bats, in flight. Streaks of mother-of-pearl nashiji
urushi represent the fast flowing air through which the birds fly. The tips of
the sayas appear to be fixed with ivory or shell caps that have been given a
rustic urushi finish. There are some very small chips to the urushi in places,
but not noticeable. It is very hard to find such a nice Edo period set in such
great condition.
