Kawazusumi Shinchu Rozuke Handachi Koshirae
Here is a very nice example of an early 17th century leather wrapped handachi
fitting that is completely in its original condition with the exception of the
saya which had a very thick coat of lacquer applied sometime in the 19th century
over the original leather wrapping. It is possible to see the original leather
wrapping through a hole in the kojiri fitting. All of the fittings of this
koshirae are completely matching having a very rare type of brass “rozuke” or
solder droplets haphazardly applied to the iron surfaces. The tsuka has a very
early leather wrapping that is intact and appears to have a silk fabric core.
The menuki are shakudo ko-kinko menuki of an Ox amongst omodaka leaves. Similar
menuki were used in a koshirae of the Mouri daimyo during the 16th century. The
tsuba is a simple sukashi iron tachi tsuba with bras appliqué typical of the
Momoyama period.
This koshirae is documented in the 2011 KTK catalog.
