O-Tanto Koshirae
Late Edo Ray Skin O-tanto
Saya
This koshirae dates to the late Edo period circa 1820-1860, and once housed a
rather good sized tanto blade, best
classified as an o-tanto. Late Edo period saya was recently liberated from a family kura (Sod warehouse). The
same is in quite good condition as are all the parts and components
of this koshirae, though, it still has some light dust in the cracks here and
there. There has been some light repair work to the seam
where the ray skin joins and to the end of the saya using original, real urushi
lacquer. The fuchikashira are iron with an assortment of alloy metalwork representing vegetation. The tsuba shows a
seasonal spring motif, of a shakudo
hare frolicking amongst trees which are about to blossom.
This is a very nice matching and tight fitting set of late Edo fittings. I envision it housing a Masahide or Munetsugu o-tanto.
