SATSUMA KATCHUSHI TSUBA

A prime example of a Satsuma style kara fukurin katchu shi tsuba.  The plate of this tsuba is notably thicker in the center than it is at the point where it enters the hollow fukurin. The gradation in thickness can be observed by looking inside the nakago ana. The large hollow iron fukurin is perfect and it is done so well that no suture is visible. Achieving such a deep and proportionately thin fukurin on a tsuba of this size is a feat to behold. The Iron is a katchu shi texture with a nice dark chocolate/purplish brown patina.  The kozuka-ana has been plugged, with a non-metallic putty sometimes seen in Japanese tosogu restoration.  Although it could be removed, the colour and texture fits so well with the tsuba, that we feel it is best left alone.  A rare and excellent tsuba at a most reasonable price point.
