Toppai Tsuka
This type of tsuka is called a Toppai Tsuka, deriving its name from the kashira which is pointy or peaked. It is thought that this sort of kashira was developed in the 16th century so that the butt of the tsuka could be used as a weapon as well. The wrapping of the tsuka is a coloured urushi mixed with shitaji. Because of this, the surface of the lacing has the feel of being made of stone. We feel that the kashira is an early toppai kashira, however we believe the wrapping to have been done in the last 150 years as it is of a variety we would not expect to see before the late Edo period. The Fuchi is a very nice shakudo variety. The tsuka is quite large and would fit a good sized sword.
